Software is useful. People close deals.

A trade that moves six-figure objects on trust does not do it entirely over a wire. Worldwatch runs dealer events in the cities the trade already travels to, in the weeks it is already traveling.

Four kinds of events

  • Member lounges

A room for verified dealers during a fair or auction week, open through the day. Come between appointments, meet whoever is there.

  • Private dinners

Ten to twenty people at one table, by invitation.

  • Larger events

Once or twice a year, a bigger room in a big city. Fifty or more dealers from ten countries, the kind of evening where you meet someone you did not know.

  • Brand and partner events

Evenings with a brand, an auction house or a partner, for members only.

From Hong Kong to Miami, Geneva to Dubai: dealers who had traded for years by message, finally at the same table.

Worldwatch Lounge Munich

On Saturday 3 October we opened at 11:00 on the seventh floor of the Infinity Hotel. The first hour was quiet. A few dealers, some coffee, and me walking around checking if everything was ready.

Around 12:00 it started to fill up. Most people came between 12:00 and 14:00, just to get away from the fair for a bit. Have a drink, eat something, play some pool. Then they went back down for one last round before the end of the day.

Some trades happened at the tables too. And I saw a few dealers sit down with watches they had just bought on the floor, opening them up and checking them properly. No rush and no one looking over their shoulder. That is something you do not really get downstairs.

But mostly it was just dealers catching up, telling stories, laughing about the day. A fair is long, and you rarely get a moment to sit down with people who do the same thing as you.

This was the second time we did the lounge. Both times I left thinking the same thing: this is the part of the trade I want Worldwatch to be about. Not only the software, but the people using it.
